SERVICE: Major in the Subsistence Department Virginia
Line, received a land grant in Kentucky for his services. He was a signer
of the Westmoreland Protest, 1776. Also he was a Lieutenant and Quartermaster.

Lieutenant Joseph Blackwell.
Executive Dept. Sept. 16, 1850. The heirs of Joseph Blackwell are allowed land bounty for his services as a Lieut. In the Contl. Line from 1st Jul., 1776 until the close of the war. Deducting any former allowance. John Floyd.
John and Joseph Blackwell, Brothers.
Fauquier Co. court, June term, 1846. Ordered certified that Joseph Blackwell entered the army of the Rev. as a Second Lieut. in Capt. John Chilton’s Comp. At the same time that his brother, John Blackwell entered as a First Lieut. in the same company. That at the Battle of the Brandywine, Capt. Chilton was killed, and John Blackwell was appointed a Captain, and was subsequently taken prisoner at the surrender of Charlestown, Co. Car.
Joseph Blackwell after the Battle of the Brandywine was engaged in the Quartermaster’s dept. and was stationed at Richmond, Va. until the close of the war. That Joseph Blackwell died in the year 1826, testate.
His children were the following:--I., Lucy (married William R. Smith); II., James; III., John; IV., Joseph; V., William; VI., Agatha Jeffries; VII., Nancy (married John H. Gaskins). That IV, Joseph died in 1831, intestate, leaving the following children:--1, Frances Jane, and 2, James D. Blackwell, all of the above named residing in Fauquier Co., and 3, Octavia (married John J. Chilton) and 4, Elizabeth (married James H. Edmonds), sisters and co-heirs of Frances Jane and James D. Blackwell, and these latter are living in the state of Missouri.
All of which is certified on motion of John Blackwell, one of the heirs aforesaid. Teste, A. J. Marshall, Clerk of Fauquier Co. court.
Abstract of the will of Joseph Blackwell of Fauquier Co. "To Ann, my wife; Daughters, Ann Agatha and Lucy; the land beginning in the line of Col Smith etc until it reaches Maj. Jefferson’s line; my son John to have the north side where he lives; my land in Culpepper whereon Nelson Parker and Grimsby live; my wife Extrx. And my son John, Extr. There is to be no inventory made and no security is required. Signed, 20 June, 1820. Witnesses, John Cowles and Joseph Chilton. Codicil.
